Anywhere But Saudi Arabia : Experiences of a Once Reluctant Expat

Description

When Bechtel offered Sean Cuddihy a transfer to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1976, his wife Kathy agreed to go along on one condition: that it was only for two years, not a minute longer. This reluctant commitment turned into a 24-year love affair with Saudi Arabia and its people. Kathy's humorous anecdotes of her adventures and misadventures trace the journey of a country in transition. Never has a nation made so much progress in so short a time. As a trusted journalist and businesswoman, Kathy witnessed, recorded and participated in this spectacular development. From palaces to prisons and mud houses to private jets, Kathy's perspective is unique and her experiences remarkable. Told with the wit and stylishness for which the author is well known, Anywhere But Saudi Arabia! is a treasure for all who know and love the Kingdom, and an eye-opener for those with no comprehension of what life was, and is, like for anunconventional non-Muslim woman in a conservative Muslim population. At times hilarious, at times shocking, but always honest and entertaining, Kathy's story is infused with deep affection for her adopted country.

Rujun Li: Dynamic Modeling and Parameter Estimation for an Epdm Process

Dynamic Modeling and Parameter Estimation for an Epdm Process

Description

A general dynamic model for continuous EPDM polymerization in which crosslinking and gel formation are attributable to reactions between pendant double bonds has been developed. A pseudo- kinetic rate constant method is introduced to construct a moment model for a pseudo-homopolymer that approximates the behavior of the actual terpolymer under long chain and quasi-steady state assumptions. The proposed dynamic model is capable of predicting polydispersities and molecular weight distributions near the gel point. A parameter selection procedure is proposed to determine the kinetic parameters that can be estimated from the limited plant data. The procedure is based on the steady-state parameter output sensitivity matrix. The overall effect of each parameter on the measured outputs is determined using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The key kinetic parameters determined by the parameter selection procedure were estimated from steady-state data extracted from dynamic plant data, using a newly developed steady state detection tool.

Bandwidth Recovery : Helping Students Reclaim Cognitive Resources Lost to Poverty, Racism, and Social Marginalization

Description

This book argues that the cognitive resources for learning of over half our young people have been diminished by the negative effects of economic insecurity, and discrimination and hostility against non-majority groups based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity, and other aspects of difference. Recognizing that these students are no different than their peers in terms of cognitive capacity, this book offers a set of strategies and interventions to rebuild the available cognitive resources necessary to succeed in college and reach their full potential.Members of these groups systematically experience conditions in their lives that result in chronic stress and, therefore, decreased physical and mental health and social and economic opportunity. The costs of the many kinds of scarcity in their lives aEURO" money, health, respect, safety, affirmation, choices, belonging aEURO" is seriously reduced aEURO÷mental bandwidth,aEURO the cognitive and emotional resources needed to deal with making good decisions, learning, healthy relationships, and more. People who are operating with depleted mental bandwidth are less able to succeed in school, starting in childhood, and are much less likely to make it to college. For those who do make it, their bandwidth capacity often interferes with learning, and therefore, persisting and graduating from college. This book presents variety of evidence-based interventions that have been shown, through implementation in high schools and colleges, to help students to regain bandwidth. They are variously intended for application inside and outside the classroom, and address not only cognitive processes but also social-psychological, non-cognitive factors that are relevant to the college environment as a whole.Beginning with an analysis of the impacts on mental and physical health and cognitive capacity, of poverty, racism, and other forms of social marginalization, Cia Verschelden presents strategies for promoting a growth mindset and self-efficacy, for developing supports that build upon studentsaEURO (TM) values and prior knowledge, and for creating learning environments both in and out of the classroom so students can feel a sense of belonging and community. She addresses issues of stereotyping and exclusion and discusses institutional structures and processes that create identity-safe rather than identity-threat learning environment. This book is intended for faculty, student affairs professionals, and college and university administrators, all of whom have an interest in creating learning environments where all students have a chance to succeed.

How to Tell a Story pdf, epub, mobi

Daniel Nayeri: How to Tell a Story

How to Tell a Story

Description

The book is a guide to the principles of creative storytelling. It covers the essential elements like conflict, characters and their motivation, dialogue, plot, theme, and, of course, the climax. As you turn the pages, you'll be prompted to roll the story blocks. And that's when the magic starts to happen. The blocks are coded by colour, each loosely associated with a part of speech. A simple exercise about motivation, for example, asks the reader to roll the blocks and find one red block (person or animal) "who wanted nothing more in this world than to" one green block (action). Depending on the outcome, the reader might end up telling a tale of a cowboy who just wanted to dance or a mummy who wanted to race cars. How to Tell a Story combines the surprising whimsy of Mad Libs with the compelling fun of storytelling cubes. Its prompts and games will have readers mastering the basics of storytelling while exercising their creative muscles. And who knows where that journey will end?

"I find writing novels a challenge, writing stories a joy. If writing novels is like planting a forest, then writing short stories is more like planting a garden." Across seven tales, Haruki Murakami brings his powers of observation to bear on the lives of men who, in their own ways, find themselves alone. Here are vanishing cats and smoky bars, lonely hearts and mysterious How to Tell a Story download epub women, baseball and the Beatles, woven together to tell stories that speak to us all. Marked by the same wry humor that has defined his entire body of work, in this collection Murakami has crafted another contemporary classic. The life of William Butler Yeats is a remarkable one - poet, playwright, essayist, politician, occultist, astrologer, founder of a national theatre, voluminous correspondent, lover, husband and father. It was a life that extended to a packed, sometimes frantic 73 years and left us with what many consider to be one of the finest collections of poetry from once voice.

The Big Book of Christian Mysticism: The Essential Guide to Contemplative Spirituality

Description

In popular usage, amysticisma typically refers to New Age or Eastern forms of spirituality. However, the mystical tradition is also an important component of the Christian tradition. At its heartaand much like its expression in other faith traditionsaChristian mysticism is an ancient practice that incorporates meditation, contemplation, worship, philosophy, the quest for personal enlightenment, and the experience of Divine presence. This volume is a comprehensive introduction and guide to Christian mysticism. It is a big book about a big possibility: the hope of achieving real, blissful, experiential unison with God. Among the topics covered here are a general introduction to mysticism, the Bible and mysticism, the history and types of Christian mysticism, biographical sketches of leading Christian mystics, and practical instructions about practicing mysticism today. This is a breathtaking work that explores a form of spirituality that has changed lives over the course of 2,000 years. Learning about Christian mysticism and how it has been articulated through the centuries will prove inspirational for todayas seekers, regardless of the faith tradition. aThe mystic is not a special kind of person; every person is a special kind of mytic.a aWilliam McNamara

What can we do in the twilight of democracy? What is the point of elections when the result is always the same? A victory for the Extreme Centre. Since 1989, politics has been replaced by a contest between who can best serve the needs of the market, fringed by unstable populist movements. The same catastrophe can be seen in the US, Britain, Europe and Australia. In this urgent and wide ranging case for the prosecution, Tariq Ali looks at the people and the events that have informed this moment of political suicide: corruption in Westminster; the failures of the EU and NATO, meanwhile the soft power of the American Empire continues to dominate the world stage uncontested. Despite this inertia, Ali also goes in search for alternative futures: the Bolivarian The Big Book of Christian Mysticism: The Essential Guide to Contemplative Spirituality download epub revolutions in Latin America, as well as signs of change at the edges of Europe. Emerging parties in Scotland, Greece and Spain, formed out of the 2008 crisis, are offering new hopes for democracy.

Further Learning from the Patient: The Analytic Space and Process

Description

In Further Learning from the Patient, Patrick Casement stresses the value of 'internal supervision' which monitors clinical work from the patient's point of view as well as the therapist's. This follow-up book to On Learning from the Patient shows that this process can teach the therapist important new things, and, by developing original concepts and using many illustrative examples, Casement enables the trainee and practising analyst to clarify and deepen their clinical understanding of the processes involved in analysis and psychotherapy. This Classic Edition includes a new introduction to the work by Maria Gilbert and together, with On Learning from the Patient, will be an invaluable training resource for trainee and practising analysts or therapists, and those teaching in related professions.

Integrated Practice covers the harmonic series in detail and includes novel approaches to improvisation, with exercises that you can apply to daily practice, rehearsing, and performing across the entire repertory. The book is accompanied by a dedicated website with dozens of video and audio clips that demonstrate the book's exercise. How Tim went from $40,000 per year and 80 hours per week to $40,000 per month and 4 hours per week Our lives are directed, either consciously or unconsciously, by our most fundamental beliefs and values. But where did those beliefs and values come from? Up until now, most of us who grew up in the West have only had two choices - either accept, lock, stock and barrel, the beliefs and values of the faith and culture we were brought up in, or reject that faith and choose another one that reflects more clearly our own sense of soul. But choosing between the many different brands on the shelves of the current 'spiritual supermarket' is no easy task - Christianity or Zen Buddhism? And what many of us have found is that even in the 'new' faith, any direct spiritual experience of our own was often denied. The new faith's own established Further Learning from the Patient: The Analytic Space and Process download epub dogma usually said that it alone had the spiritual authority to validate our experience. Now The Quest opens up another path. It does not tell you what to think or believe. Instead, it gives you some very powerful tools to re-examine, re-appraise and rebuild your most fundamental beliefs and values and then re-integrate them into your life.

Paul Barnett: Is the New Testament Reliable?

Is the New Testament Reliable?

Description

The historical claims of the New Testament--that Jesus performed miracles, fulfilled prophecy, died and rose again, and ascended into heaven--come to us as received tradition, and we receive them in faith, trusting that the New Testament is indeed an inspired collection of writings, that it indeed tells us the truth. Increasingly, the reliability of not just the New Testament but reallyany document of history is called into question. If everyone writes from a point of view and with an agenda, can we reasonably expect any historical account to be objective--to tell us the truth? In this newly revised edition ofIs the New Testament Reliable? Paul Barnett defends the task of the historian and the concept of history. He then addresses questions about the New Testament of importance to people of faith and skeptics alike: How close in time are the New Testament documents to the life of Jesus? Why should we believe the writings of "biased" early Christians? Were any of the writers of the New Testament books eyewitnesses to the events it records? How can we know that what was originally written has not been altered through the centuries? It is no small thing to trust ancient claims, but Barnett shows that we can take confidence in the New Testament, for it tells us the truth.

* For anybody else, hunting Lobo would be suicide. For Deathstroke, it's just business. But can Slade Wilson handle the power of the intergalatic slaver and last Czarian? He'll need some help and he'll be getting it from Zealot! Plus, the origin of Deathstroke! Discover how Slade Wilson became the killing machine Be Free Where You are free pdf we know him as today and his ties to Team 7! Here anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom: he shows that before there was money, there was debt. For more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods--that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.

Michael Moorcock: Elric the Stealer of Souls

Elric the Stealer of Souls

Description

"The stories here are the raw heart of Michael Moorcock. They are the spells that first drew me and all the numerous admirers of his work with whom I am acquainted into Moorcock's luminous and captivating web." -from the Foreword by Alan Moore, creator of V for Vendetta When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melnibone, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero-weak in body, subtle in mind, dependent on drugs for the vitality to sustain himself-with great crimes behind him and a greater destiny ahead: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the sixties into one enduring archetype. Now, with a major film in development, here is the first volume of a dazzling collection of stories containing the seminal appearances of Elric and lavishly illustrated by award-winning artist John Picacio-plus essays, letters, maps, and other material. Adventures include "The Dreaming City," "While the Gods Laugh," "Kings in Darkness," "Dead God's Homecoming," "Black Sword's Brothers," and "Sad Giant's Shield." An indispensable addition to any fantasy collection, Elric: The Stealer of Souls is an unmatched introduction to a brilliant writer and his most famous-or infamous-creation. "The most significant UK author of sword and sorcery, a form he has both borrowed from and transformed." -The Encyclopedia of Fantasy

Among the Aztecs the drinking of chocolate was confined to the royal house, the lords, and the nobility. A report by Spanish conquistador Bernial Diaz del Castillo noted that Montezuma drank chocolate several times a day from beakers made of pure gold. The Spanish brought chocolate to Europe in the late 1500s, and by the 1660s it was a favorite drink of Renaissance Italian noblemen. In the 1800s it became a popular drink among the literary figures who gathered in London's coffee houses, and in the nineteenth century the world's first chocolate candy was produced in the city of Bristol, England ." An elegant stylist and unfashionably honest poet, McMillan's eye and ear are tuned, exactly, to both the mechanics Mystery in the Minster: The Seventeenth Chronicle of Matthew Bartholomew free download pdf of the body and the miracles of the heart. 'Someone jolted my elbow as I drank and said, "Je vous demande pardon," and as I moved to give him space he turned and stared at me and I at him, and I realised, with a strange sense of shock and fear and nausea all combined, that his face and voice were known to me too well. I was looking at myself.' By chance, two men - one English, the other French - meet in a provincial railway station. Their resemblance is uncanny, and they spend the next few hours talking and drinking - until at last John, the Englishman, falls into a drunken stupor. It's to be his last carefree moment, for when he wakes, his French companion has stolen his identity and disappeared. So John steps into the Frenchman's shoes, and faces a variety of perplexing roles - as owner of a chateau, director of a failing business, head of a fractious family, and master of nothing.
